Sun damage, aging and smoking are some of the main causes of wrinkles. Getting rid of wrinkles can be challenging enough, without having to simultaneously battle acne. While acne usually begins during the teen years, it can persist into your 20s, 30s or even your 40s. Fortunately, there are effective ways to treat both conditions at the same time. A qualified dermatologist can properly assess your skin and suggest the best treatments for your particular case.
Retinoids
These ingredients are derived from vitamin A, or retinol. Commonly used retinoids include tretinoin, which is sold under the brand name Retin-A, and adapalene, sold under the name Differin. Paula Begoun, author of "The Original Beauty Bible," recommends getting to know about these products if you're trying to remedy wrinkles, sun-damaged or acne-pone skin. They act on the dermis layer of the skin, promoting the production of normal cells. However, these products irritate the skin and cause peeling and dryness. If you notice these symptoms, use the products less often or with a lower concentration of the active ingredients. Also, because they cause sun sensitivity, always apply a sunscreen when wearing retinoids before going outside.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are deep exfoliants that remove the top layer of skin to uncover smooth, clear skin below and to stimulate collagen production, explains Susan C. Taylor, a dermatologist and author of "Rx for Brown Skin." The most common ingredients in chemical peels are alpha hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acid, or salicylic acid. These ingredients help improve the appearance of acne, fade discoloration or hyperpigmentation and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Chemical peels containing trichloracetic acid can reduce acne scars, fine lines and deeper wrinkles, according to Taylor. Be aware that your skin may temporarily worsen before getting better after a peel. Also, while chemical peels are available for at-home use, professional treatments provide the best results.
Resurfacing Lasers
According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, laser resurfacing can improve skin problems such as wrinkles and acne scars. The procedure involves using a wand-like laser device to vaporize damaged skin cells and wrinkles to reveal fresh skin cells. The procedure penetrates deep into the skin in a more precise and safer way compared to older laser treatments.
