How to Get Rid of Cellulite Naturally

Cellulite is an accumulation of fat cells under the skin, most specifically in the subcutaneous fat layers. There is no specific cause for cellulite, although there are factors that make it more likely to appear. Few men develop cellulite, while up to 80 percent of women do, according to the Mayo Clinic, which has led experts to believe it's closely linked to hormones. In its advanced state, cellulite can also cause swelling and pain, although most women only deal with its most common characteristic: dimpling of the skin.

Step 1

Change your dietary habits. A low-fat, high-fiber diet is essential to get rid of cellulite. While you should reduce your overall fat intake, pay special attention to saturated (animal) fats, which are harder for the body to process. Instead, choose unsaturated (vegetable) fats like olive oil, flaxseed and nuts. Also, consume more fiber, as water retention worsens the appearance of cellulite.

Step 2

Avoid highly processed foods, which are high in fat and sodium. This includes packaged snacks like chips, pastries, sodas and fast food.

Step 3

Keep your body hydrated. Drink at least 10 glasses of water a day and lower your consumption of caffeine and alcohol.

Step 4

Lose weight. Cellulite is fat, so losing weight will naturally lower how much you have. Losing weight through exercise is better than losing it through diet alone, as exercise usually leads to fat loss. Extreme diets, on the other hand, can lead to water and muscle loss, which would make cellulite even more noticeable. For best results, engage in circuit training, in which you follow a mix of cardio and weight training/abs exercises without breaks in between each other. This keeps your heart rate elevated and ensures maximum fat burning.

Step 5

Work out your lower body. Exercises that primarily engage the lower body will help you build muscle and tighten the skin, decreasing the appearance of cellulite. You will also burn fat in the process. Good lower-body exercises include jumping rope, rebounding (trampoline jumping), jogging and cycling.

Step 6

Brush your skin regularly. This stimulates the lymphatic system, getting the fat to move and dissolve quicker. It also leads new cell growth. Use a body brush before the shower to scrub. Keep in mind that this will only work as an addition to the diet and exercise program, rather than as a remedy in itself.
