The Atkin's Diet, created by Dr. Robert Atkins in the 1970s, promotes weight loss by stimulating a processed called ketosis. Ketosis occurs when the body contains low levels of carbohydrates, forcing it to use other sources of energy. The last source of energy that the body can use is stored fat. Accordingly, reducing carbohydrate intake but maintaining an active lifestyle is the core reasoning for fat reduction on the Atkins Diet. Phase 1 of the Atkins Diet, also known as Induction, requires food with almost no carbohydrates.

Meats

Meats like beef, chicken, lamb, turkey, pork, fish and seafood are devoid of starches. However, many of these meats are high in fat and cholesterol and are counterproductive. Subsequently, to garner the most benefit, eat only lean and skinless meats. Sauces and some seasonings can also contain carbohydrates, so it is best to eat these meats with minimal seasoning.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables can contain starches, but most of them do not. Fruits that do not contain many carbohydrates include apples, apricots, blackcurrants, cherries, grapefruit, grapes, melons, oranges, pears, raspberries, strawberries and plums. Vegetables that do not contain starch include cucumber, asparagus, artichoke, celery, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, chayote, jicama, leek, eggplant, okra, onions, beets and cabbage. Squash, corn, peas, potatoes and bananas are examples of fruits that are high in starch, which you should avoid during Atkins Phase 1.

Other Foods

Dairy products low in carbohydrates include low-fat or skim milk, low-fat and sugar-free yogurt and cottage cheese. However, every other type of cheese contains carbohydrates and should be avoided. Legumes, such as kidney beans, pinto beans, navy beans and black-eyed peas are acceptable. Eggs are also acceptable, as they too contain little to no carbs.
