Magnesium is a mineral present in the human body. It is responsible for over 300 biochemical reactions in the body, according to MedlinePlus. It helps support the immune system, keeps bones strong, maintains proper nerve function and is good for the heart. Magnesium lactate is a mineral supplement used to treat magnesium deficiency and other medical conditions including osteoporosis, migraine headaches, metabolic syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Osteoporosis Treatment

Around 50 percent of the total body magnesium is in your bones. Evidence suggests that taking magnesium supplements can help prevent bone loss in mature adults, according to MedlinePlus. A study by L. Steidl and R. Ditmar published in the 1991 issue of "Acta Universitatis Palackianae Olomucensis Facultatis Medicae" treated 37 patients with osteoporosis with magnesium lactate. The patients were evaluated at three intervals during a two-year period. They found that magnesium lactate had a positive influence on spine mobility and pain.

Migraine Headache Relief

Magnesium supplements may help prevent migraine headaches and reduce their duration, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. People prone to migraine headaches tend to have low levels of magnesium.

A 1991 study by A J. Opavsky with the Department of Pharmacology at the Medical Faculty Palacky University in Czechoslovakia treated 20 patients suffering from migraines with magnesium lactate in oral form. The conclusion, published in "Acta Universitatis Palackianae Olomucensis Facultatis Medicae," that magnesium has beneficial effects on migraine headaches.

Metabolic Syndrome Treatment

A study by F. Guerrero-Romero and M. Rodriguez-Moran published in the December, 2002, issue of "Acta Diabetologica" found that low magnesium levels are linked to metabolic syndrome. People with low levels of magnesium are more likely to have metabolic syndrome, according to MedlinePlus. Taking magnesium supplements can lower the risk of metabolic syndrome by 27 percent, notes the NIH.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

One of the early signs of magnesium deficiency is fatigue. A placebo-controlled study by IM Cox et al., published in the March 30, 1991, issue of "Lancet" treated 20 chronic fatigue syndrome patients with magnesium supplements. The patients given the magnesium reported improved energy levels, reduced pain and better emotional states. They concluded that magnesium may have a positive role in CFS treatment.
