A full head of glossy, shiny hair is attractive and creates a youthful, vibrant appearance. This look can be especially difficult to attain for people with thin, fine hair. When hair strands break, the ends split, which can lead to frizz. Broken strands don't reflect light as well as smooth, undamaged hair, which reduces shine. With a little care, it is possible to reduce breakage of fine hair.
Step 1
Shampoo gently. Rubbing the hair and scalp vigorously can damage hair and lead to breakage.
Step 2
Apply a conditioner that removes tangles as well as moisturizes. Fine hair is often more prone to tangles. The easier your tangles slide out of your hair, the less damage you'll have during styling. Allow the conditioner to soak into your hair for several minutes before rinsing.
Step 3
Comb wet hair gently. Wet hair is more fragile than dry hair, and can stretch and snap when combed. Start at the ends of hair and gradually work your way toward the scalp when combing.
Step 4
Style hair with care. Chemical treatments such as perms and relaxers can cause hair to break off, as can teasing and other aggressive types of styling. Use an inexpensive plastic brush with widely spaced bristles to style hair. Boars hair brushes, while expensive and often considered a better choice, create friction during styling and can lead to damage, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
Tips and Warnings
- Consider changing your hairstyle if breakage is a problem. A wash and go cut that requires little heat styling is ideal for fine hair. Choose a haircut that allows you to wear your hair down most days. Pulling fine hair into rubber bands and clips can encourage breakage.
