When someone is dehydrated, he has lost more fluids than he has taken in and his body cannot carry on normal functioning. Exercise, sports or strenuous activities -- especially in hot weather -- can cause dehydration. The person might feel thirsty, lightheaded and tired, and might develop a headache or lack sweat. Using an oral rehydration solution such as Gatorade will replenish lost fluids. According to Gatorade, its "thirst quencher" products contain electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and chloride than can help restore fluid balance and muscle functioning in the body.
Step 1
Get the person to rest in a cool area away from the sun, or in an air-conditioned room or car.
Step 2
Loosen the person's clothes. Apply cold compresses to the neck, armpits or groin to cool the person's body.
Step 3
Give the person as much Gatorade to drink as he wants, or until his initial thirst is quenched. Continue giving Gatorade slowly every 15 minutes or until urine runs clear.
Tips and Warnings
- Call a doctor or 911 if the person does not feel better after rehydration, or if the person continues to vomit or lose fluids. Signs of severe dehydration are rapid heartbeat, sunken eyes, confusion or unconsciousness. Extreme dehydration requires emergency medical attention.
