In 1968, the Flinstone Vitamin was born. Today, there are several types of the popular vitamin. Besides the standard Flinstone Complete Multivitamin, there are versions featuring extra vitamin C -- the same amount per pill as contained in three oranges -- extra calcium for strong bones and teeth and extra iron to promote healthy physical and mental health.

With all these options, it can be a bit overwhelming to analyze the nutritional value of Flinstone vitamins. If you don't need any extras added, the Flinstone Complete has plenty to offer.

Vitamins

There are 12 vitamins in each tablet of Flinstone Complete, nine of which contain 100 percent of daily recommended values: vitamins C, D, E, B-1, B-2, B-6, folic acid, B12 and pantothenic acid. They have 60 percent of the daily value of vitamin A, 75 percent of suggested niacin and 13 percent of recommended biotin, which promotes healthy hair and skin.

Minerals

Flinstone Complete also includes 7 minerals, including 100 percent of recommended daily iron and iodine and 10 percent of suggested calcium and phosphorus, the latter of which promotes energy. Magnesium, important for healthy cell and nerve function, comes in a 5 percent dose. It also contains 80 percent of a child's daily zinc intake and 100 percent of suggested copper, which aids in blood production.

Sugar and Gluten

Monitoring sugar intake is important to many parents. In the Complete version, there's .34 g of sugar. The version with extra iron and vitamin C contains 1 g and the extra-calcium vitamin contains .42 g. The gummy version has 2.8 g of sugar, while sour gummies contain 3 g. All versions of Flinstone vitamins are free of gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye products to which some children are allergic.

Aspertame

Flinstone Vitamins also contain aspartame, an artificial sweetener. There have been questions about the safety of aspartame, with some claiming it can cause brain tumors, vision problems or other allergic reactions. According to the Aspertame Information Center, these allegations have been studied and proven to be incorrect. As with any food or drug deemed safe, there is always a possibility of allergic reaction.

Overdose Warning

An overdose of iron can possibly be fatal, especially for children less than 6 years of age. Since all Flinstone vitamins contain iron, manufacturer Bayer suggests keeping them out of the reach of children. If you suspect an accidental overdose of iron, contact The National Poison Control Center at 800-222-1222.
