Hair removal systems offer temporary and permanent solutions to get rid of unwanted hair all over the body including bikini line, eyebrows and back. Receive hair removal treatments from a certified professional or do it yourself at home. The dangers and efficacy of hair removal systems depends on a number of variables including the thickness and color of the hair being removed and the skill of the person performing the hair removal.

Types of Laser Hair Removal Systems

Laser hair removal systems employ the latest technology to permanently remove unwanted hair. The ruby laser was among the first of these devices to hit the market, according to information provided by the Department of Dermatology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine Skin Laser and Surgery Specialist Department in New York and New Jersey. The March 2007 issue of the journal "Expert Review of Medical Devices," explains that laser hair removal systems currently in use include alexandrite, diode and neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet---also called "Nd:YAG"---laser devices, as well as a variety of broad-spectrum intense pulsed light sources.

Home Laser Treatment

Factors including cost and modesty drive women to invest in home hair removal systems. The efficacy and safety of the Silk'N home hair removal device, a small, portable, low-energy IPL based hair removal system was evaluated by Medical Director at the Gold Skin Care Center, a division Tennessee Clinical Research Center. The results published in the February 2010 issue of the "Journal of Clinical Dermatology" found after six sessions patients had hair reduction at the rate of 37.8 to 53.6 percent, gave the device a high consumer satisfaction score and experienced minimal side effects.

Electrolysis

The hair removal system called electrolysis provides permanent results according to information provided by DermNet NZ, a website from the Dermatological Society of New Zealand. A fine needle delivers a small but damaging electric current to the hair follicle, eventually destroying it. This hair removal system is slower than laser and the efficacy of electrolysis is dependent on the skill of the technician.

Use During Pregnancy

The American Pregnancy Association promotes pregnancy wellness cautions against electrolysis treatments during pregnancy especially on the breasts and abdomen in the last trimester. The APA also advises against laser hair removal treatments while pregnant because of the lack of scientific studies regarding effects to the fetus and checking with your health professional before waxing as your skin may react differently to this hair removal system during pregnancy.

Complications and Side Effects

Using a hair removal system may cause health complications and side effects, cautions DermaNet NZ. Patients receiving electrolysis treatments may experience temporary redness, permanent scarring, impetigo or reactivation of herpes. According to information provided by the American Academy of Dermatology individuals undergoing laser treatments may experience pain during treatment and temporary redness, skin or tattoo discoloration, blistering and herpes outbreaks after treatment.
