While Callaway Golf is commonly associated with game-improvement clubs, including large irons and big-headed drivers, their X-Forged irons go in a different direction. These irons are designed for the better ball striker. Callaway's X-Forged irons can help your golf game, but they're not for beginners.
Features
The Callaway X-Forged irons are available in left- and right-handed versions. They have a swing weight of D2 and progressive bounce angles in line with the iron's number. For example, the 3-iron has three degrees of bounce, while the 8-iron has eight degrees of bounce. The Golf Pride Tour Velvet is the standard grip for these irons, though others are available.
Loft
Most Callaway iron lofts are usually stronger than normal in order to help higher-handicap players hit the ball further, but the X-Forged lofts are weaker for the better player. The X-Forged 3-iron's loft is 21 degrees. The 4-iron has 24 degrees of loft, the 5-iron has 27 degrees of loft and the 6-iron has a loft of 31 degrees. The X-Forged 7-iron has 35 degrees of loft, and the 8- and 9-irons have lofts of 39 and 43 degrees, respectively. The pitching wedge has 47 degrees of loft.
Standard Shaft
The standard shaft for the X-Forged irons is the Callaway Project X Flighted shaft. This shaft is designed to optimize trajectory throughout the set. This is achieved through a progressively higher kickpoint as you move from the long to the short irons. The longer irons have an increased launch angle to produce a high ball flight with low spin, while the short iron shafts create a lower, more controlled trajectory.
Other Shafts
Many other shafts can be custom-selected when ordering, including steel-shaft brands such as Nippon and Dynamic Gold. The Project X shafts are heavier than most steel options, so those with less strength may want to select the Dynamic Gold option. The Nippon range of shafts are even lighter than the Dynamic Golds. If you're looking to generate a little more clubhead speed, consider the lighter graphite options such as the Aldila VS Proto (available at a slightly higher cost).
Technology
Callaway's Dual Notch weighting system results in a controllable ball flight. The system allows Callaway to adjust the weighting through the X-Forged set, adding more weight to the shorter irons and removing it from the longer clubs to create more penetrating trajectories. The X-Forged irons also offer added control in terms of power. The forging process prevents pockets of air from being trapped in the metal, which creates a more consistent energy transfer. The improved consistency results in greater distance control.
