Acid reflux or acid regurgitation is a condition in which stomach acid leaks back through the lower esophageal sphincter or the LES, into the esophagus. This causes symptoms, such as a burning sensation in the throat and stabbing pains in the chest region. By avoiding certain foods, you may be able to decrease your risk for complications and reduce your need for medications.

High Fat Foods and Fast Foods

Foods high in saturated fat such as meat, butter and donuts require the secretion of more stomach acid than other foods; this delays stomach emptying, making it more likely for stomach contents to regurgitate back into the esophagus.

Foods Items That Relax the LES

Chocolate contains Methylxanthine, a constituent known to relax the lower esophageal sphincter, the band of smooth muscle that protects the esophagus from the stomach contents. When this sphincter is relaxed, stomach acid is more likely to leak back into the esophagus and cause symptoms. Other foods that should be avoided in this category include peppermint, caffeine and alcohol.

Citrus Fruits and Tomatoes

Oranges, grapefruits and tomatoes are acidic in nature and may further irritate the esophageal lining, especially if eaten on an empty stomach. Avoid these foods if they are a trigger for you.

Elimination Diet

There may be other foods that aggravate your condition. Spend a week writing your food intake down to determine your own triggers. This will help you to avoid the foods that trigger the condition.
