Shaving with a dull razor or not softening the skin before shaving can result in razor bumps, according to Indiana University. Tiny red bumps on your skin are usually the first sign of razor rash; pain is the second. If you have razor bumps, your pores remain open. This can leave you susceptible to bacterial infection. Homemade remedies to treat razor bumps can help calm your skin and prevent infections from forming.

Step 1

Saturate a cotton ball with apple cider vinegar. Dab the cotton ball on your skin. Leave the apple cider vinegar on your skin for 10 minutes, followed by a cool water rinse. Repeat three to four times per day until the rash goes away.

Step 2

Apply witch hazel to the razor bump rash using cotton balls. Pour the witch hazel on the cotton balls and dab them on the rash. Repeat the process three to four times a day until the razor bump rash resolves.

Step 3

Place four or five uncoated aspirin tablets in a small bowl and crush with a fork. Add ¼ cup of water to form a thin paste. Dip cotton balls into the crushed aspirin and apply to the razor bumps. Remove with a cool water rinse after 10 minutes. Repeat three to four times a day until the rash resolves.

Tips and Warnings

  • Avoid shaving the affected area of skin until the razor bumps heal.
  • Never use any products that contain alcohol on razor bumps. Not only will the alcohol cause painful burning, it can also make the rash worse. If the skin around the rash becomes discolored or swollen, seek medical attention. These symptoms could be a sign of infection.
