How to Use Extra Virgin Coconut Oil As a Hair Moisturizer

Coconut oil is made from the white part of the coconut and has moisturizing properties. You can use the oil alone or or mix it with other oils for an effective hair moisturizer. Essential oils, such rose, lavender and chamomile add a pleasant scent and, according to Valerie Ann Worwood, author of "The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy," also moisturize the hair. Extra virgin coconut oil is available at grocery and health-food stores. Essential oils and jojoba oil is available from health-food stores, massage supply stores and online retailers.

Step 1

Remove the interior pot from the double boiler, add approximately 1 inch of cold water to the interior pot and bring the water to boil.

Step 2

Add the coconut oil to the interior pot of the double boiler and put the interior pot inside the exterior pot. Stir the oil until it melts fully.

Step 3

Add the jojoba, sweet almond and castor oils. Stir the oils until fully blended. Turn off the heat and remove the interior pot.

Step 4

Set the pot on a heat-safe surface and add 10 drops each of rose and lavender oil, and five drops of chamomile Roman to the mixture. Stir until blended.

Step 5

Let the oil sit until it is cool enough to pour into the air-tight plastic container.

Applying the Moisturizer

Step 1

Scoop 2 tbsp. of coconut moisturizer into a heat-safe dish. Heat the oil, on low, in the microwave until warm.

Step 2

Massage the oil into your roots and scalp, and work the oil to the ends of your hair. Cover your head with a plastic cap and wrap your head in a towel.

Step 3

Sit for up to one hour then rinse your hair with warm water. Wash your hair with a moisturizing shampoo and condition and style as usual.

Tips and Warnings

  • Store the oil in a cool, dry place for up to six months. Apply the oil once every two weeks at a hot-oil treatment. For extra dry hair, rub a dime-sized amount between your palms and work it through your hair after washing and conditioning. Leave it in. Use up to a quarter-sized amount for longer hair.
