Dry weather can wreak havoc on your hair. Between dry weather's tendency to leach moisture right out of your hair and damaged hair's tendency to pick up a charge from static electricity, maintaining smooth, silky hair in parched air conditions can be a formidable task. But it is possible, says Ouidad, a salon owner in New York City, according to "Fitness" magazine. The key is to restore moisture to your dehydrated locks so they can look their best.

Step 1

Use a moisturizing shampoo every other day. Look for the words "moisturizing" or "hydrating" on the label. Skipping a day between shampoos helps keep your scalp from drying out.

Step 2

Apply a leave-in conditioner generously to your damp hair after shampooing. According to Ouidad, leave-in conditioner is better than a hair mask since its polymers bind to your hair cuticle instead of getting rinsed away, smoothing it down so your hair looks shinier.

Step 3

Blot your hair with a towel and let it air-dry as much as possible. Protecting your hair from damage helps it maintain its silky appearance during dry weather.

Step 4

Use an ionic hair dryer to dry your hair. Ionic dryers don't strip moisture from your hair the way traditional dryers do, explains New York City hair stylist Orlando Pita in "Cosmopolitan" magazine.

Step 5

Tie a cotton scarf or bandanna loosely around your head before putting on a wool hat to prevent hat head and keep your hair smooth.

Step 6

Rub a little anti-frizz cream onto the ends of your hair to prevent flyaways and split ends from making your hair look rough.

Step 7

Run an unscented anti-static dryer sheet lightly over your hair to calm static and flyaways so your hair looks silky smooth.

Things You'll Need

  • Moisturizing shampoo
  • Leave-in conditioner
  • Ionic hair dryer
  • Anti-frizz cream
  • Anti-static dryer sheets
