Hormonal changes can cause brown spots to form on the surface of the skin. This common skin condition, known as melasma, appears mainly in women with darker skin tones. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, this condition is especially common in pregnant women, as well as women taking hormone medication, such as birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy. Although discolored areas tend to fade with time, taking special measures may help reduce the appearance and the recurrence of melasma.

Step 1

Cleanse your skin with a gentle cleanser, rather than using products that cause exfoliation. The American Academy of Dermatologists warns that skin irritation can encourage the cells that produce pigment, known as melanocytes, to create more pigment, possibly exacerbating this condition. Avoid irritation by using your fingertips or a soft washcloth to distribute the cleanser over affected areas, such as your face and neck. Splash your skin with fresh water to remove all traces of the cleanser, makeup and pollutants. Dry carefully by blotting lightly with a soft towel.

Step 2

Apply a fade cream that contains hydroquinone. This skin-lightening agent can help fade the depth of color in your brown spots. Apply this product to your clean, dry skin according to the package instructions. You may need to reapply your fade cream once or twice each day.

Step 3

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to your exposed areas of skin prior to going outdoors. Use a product that has a sun-protection factor of at least 30. For areas of melasma on your facial skin, choose an oil-free product to reduce the possibility of developing clogged pores. Stay in the shade when possible, or wear a large-brimmed hat to provide additional protection from the sun's rays.

Step 4

Talk to your doctor about prescription medications if your over-the-counter fade cream fails to produce adequate results. Discuss the available medical options for removing your brown patches. He may prescribe a combination cream that contains tretinoin, hydroquinone and a corticosteroid. Ask him about whether he recommends chemical peels or microdermabrasion treatments for your condition.
