Facts on Calendula

1. Beautiful Yellow Blossoms

Calendula is a flower with bright yellow, gold and orange blooms. Calendula is known for its beauty and medicinal qualities, but the colorful blossoms can be used to treat a variety of ailments. Calendula blossoms are edible and give rice, yogurt, soups or salads and tangy flavor and lovely color.

2. Shield Yourself From Free Radicals

Calendula is full of flavanoids, which are antioxidants found naturally in vegetables and fruits. Flavanoids are the substances that give plants their lovely bright colors, and also protect them from bugs and microbes. They protect the cells of the human body in much the same way, shielding them from free radicals and damage that can lead to disease.

3. Have a Soothing Cup of Tea

Brew a cup of calendula tea, which is not only delicious and soothing to an upset tummy, but also makes a great mouthwash that can freshen the breath and ease canker sores. Simply put about a teaspoon of dried blossoms in a cup of boiling water and let them steep for about ten minutes. Two or three cups a day can ease gas and indigestion. If you want to use it for mouthwash, brew it the same way, allow it to cool and use it for a mouth rinse or gargle.

4. Discover the Healing Power of Calendula

Calendula has great healing powers, and can clear up all sorts of skin problems by increasing flow to the injured or affected areas. When applied topically, calendula has anti-inflammatory qualities that can prevent infection of minor skin wounds. It can reduce itching and swelling of insect bites and rashes and is soothing to cuts, scrapes, sunburns, chapped, overworked hands and minor burns.

5. Rub on Some Salve

It's easy to make your own calendula salve. Simply pick a basket of blossoms on a dry morning, and shake them to remove extra dirt. Lay the blossoms in the sun until they're dry and then place them in a quart jar filled with 1 cup of olive oil. Give the jar a stir, cover it loosely with cheesecloth and let it sit in a sunny window for a couple of weeks, until the oil turns a lovely golden color. Strain the oil through a cloth laid in a strainer, and squeeze the cloth so nothing is wasted. Heat the oil in a saucepan and stir in about 1/4 cup of beeswax. Once the beeswax melts, your calendula salve is finished. Store it in a cool place and use it anytime your skin needs some soothing.
