If you suffer from dark circles under your eyes, you know how much of a toll they can take on your confidence and self-esteem. And you're not alone; in a 2006 study by beauty product maker Clinque, 53 percent of women said such circles were their No. 1 beauty concern.

Naturally, with the condition proven to be so prevalent, a variety of home remedies have been discovered. Several ways to cure or reduce dark circles exist, and they don't involve breaking the bank on beauty products.

Step 1

Sleep better. Fatigue may be contributing to your raccoon-like appearance, so if your sleep habits are inconsistent or insufficient, focus on treating yourself to better rest. This not only means sleeping longer, but also sleeping more regularly. Not getting enough sleep or having irregular sleep habits affects your overall health, and an unhealthy appearance, including dark circles, is often a byproduct of an unhealthy body.

Step 2

Slice or grate some cucumber and let it rest on your eyes for 15 minutes. Cucumber has long been used as a natural remedy for skin problems because it contains both caffeic acid and vitamin A, each of which helps to ease inflammation and comfort irritated skin. This is best done before bed, because the residue will sit on your eyes all night.

Step 3

Quit smoking. Smokers often suffer worse from dark circles for a few reasons: the harmful chemicals in cigarettes lead to a less healthy body and, thus, a less healthy appearance. It also hurts your production of vitamin C, which helps skin cells regenerate. Smoking also constricts blood vessels, allowing less blood to flow to your face.

Step 4

Conceal them. If all else fails, you can hide your circles by applying a bit of concealer under your eyes before leaving the house. This option isn't for women only; many men are now using makeup to obscure their raccoon eyes. It's best to let your wife apply the makeup until you get the hang of it, though, assuming you don't want others to know you're wearing it.

Step 5

Drink more water. If you're dehydrated or ingesting an excessive amount of caffeine, this may be at least partially responsible for you circles. Drinking 8 cups of water daily will prevent dehydration and flush your system of some toxins that may be causing or contributing to the circles.
