A colon cleanse involves taking a variety of supplements or having water infused through your colon in order to get rid of toxins found within the intestinal tract. Purported benefits of colon cleansing include improved bowel health, increased energy and a stronger immune system. If you plan to do a colon cleanse, you should first speak to your doctor about the procedure and how to prepare your body for it.
Step 1
Drink a lot of water before you plan to do a colon cleanse. The major risk associated with these types of procedures is dehydration. Try to drink a gallon of water on a daily basis if possible. However, you may be informed by the spa performing the colon cleanse to stop drinking anything an hour before your appointment.
Step 2
Eat a light diet the week of your colon cleanse. Try to consume mostly fruits as snacks and salads as your main meals. Include some whole grains and lean proteins as part of your diet as well. Although you should eat light, you are not required to fast as a way to pre-cleanse.
Step 3
Eliminate foods high in fat as a way to pre-cleanse before your colon cleanse. Avoid fast food entrees, fried foods, packaged meals and sweets. You should not eat anything approximately 2 hours before your colon cleanse.
Step 4
Take an enema the night before your colon cleanse. Some spas recommend taking an enema or laxative the evening prior to the colon cleanse. It is said to help the body get rid of the toxins more effectively.
Step 5
Avoid any carbonated beverages as part of your pre-cleanse. You should stop drinking sodas, beer and other carbonated drinks at least two days before the cleanse.
Step 6
Spend time exercising before you have a colon cleanse. Exercise is said to improve intestinal circulation. Some activities you can do include walking, running, yoga, Pilates and swimming.
