Retin-A is a product often used to treat both wrinkles and acne lesions. According to Wrinklecreamsreview.org, it is a potent derivative of vitamin A that is absorbed into the dermis, or layer of skin below the surface layer, and might be able to repair damage that causes wrinkles. Scientifically referred to as tretinoin, it also helps to clear pores of black and white head pimples. These creams can be effective, yet extremely powerful. Talk to your doctor and your dermatologist before considering these as skin-care options.

Function

Retin-A works in several ways to potentially rejuvenate and clear your skin. According to a study published in Experimental Dermatology in August 2010, vitamin A plays a major role in the differentiation and growth of developing and adult skin. The study states that retinoic acid is the major physiologically active form of vitamin A, but that retinol and retinal are also fully capable of regulating the genes necessary to promote skin cell growth. Everydayhealth.com states that Retin-A may also thicken the dermis, help produce collagen and increase blood flow to your skin.

Side Effects

Retin-A and its derivatives are powerful, and can cause adverse reactions, which is the reason why certain doses are only available by prescription. Wrinklecreamsreview.org discusses its effect on moisture in the skin. One of the most common side effects is excessive drying or flaking of the skin, which can be difficult to control. You will also be more sensitive to ultraviolet rays from the sun. Lotions with sun protecting formula will need to be applied to protect your skin. Vitamin A can also be irritating, and caution should be taken if you are pregnant as excess vitamin A may harm a fetus. You will need a dermatological exam to receive a prescription for most Retin-A creams.

Wrinkles

Retin-A and its derivatives have been found to effectively reduce the signs of aging on your skin. According to a study published in The Journal of Dermatological Treatment in 2009, the topical application of retinol cream produced desirable results. The study included Japanese women who applied a .075 percent retinol cream to half of their face for a total of 26 weeks. The results showed significant improvement for fine wrinkling and some improvement for deep wrinkles, with three subjects withdrawing because of irritation. The study also found .04 percent retinol cream to be slightly less effective, but much less irritating.

Acne

If you have acne, Retin-A and other derivatives of vitamin A might be beneficial for your skin because they can displace the blockages that cause pimples. Adults as well as adolescents might be able to use vitamin A treatments. A study published in June 2010 in Pediatrics tested the effectiveness of .04 percent tretinoin microsphere gel on patients ages 8 to 12 years. After 12 weeks, 75 percent of cases decreased in severity, being graded at mild to clear. The study states that the treatment was generally well tolerated by all participants.

Topical Creams

Retin-A itself is available by prescription, although some retinol creams may be found as over-the-counter products. The generic prescription of tretinoin cream is available from pharmacies, as well as brand names like Renova, Retin-A Micro and Tazorac.
