Whether used for their health benefits, for relaxation or just to pamper yourself; beauty treatments have become an industrial force well into the billions, according to the International Spa Association. Beauty treatments can vary in cost and procedure depending on the provider, but all treatments have the same goal: to help you find the healthier and more beautiful you.
Manicure
One of the most common types of beauty treatments is the manicure. Manicures consist of cutting the nails, shaping the nails, polishing the nails and treating the cuticles. Manicurist may also use products to treat and soften the skin of the hands as well as may implement hand massage as part of the overall treatment.
Pedicure
Pedicures are similar to manicures except that they are performed on the feet instead of the hands. Like a manicure, the nails of the toes are cut, polished and shaped. Pedicures may go one step further and include sanding down areas of the bottom of the feet that are dry or cracking (especially the heel), as well as soaking the feet, and massaging the feet.
Facial
Facials are performed by licensed estheticians and can help take care of many common problem skin issues. Facials work to cleanse and moisturize the face. They also exfoliate the skin to remove dead skin cells, as well as encourage the formation of new skin cells. They may also include blackhead extractions, facial massages, skin toners, specialized skin masks and protective creams.
Wraps
Body wraps are another common beauty treatment. Body wraps can be individualized using substances for weight loss, toxin release or relaxation and moisturization. In a body wrap you are covered in lotions or muds customized for the type of treatment you are receiving. You are then wrapped in mylar or plastic and covered to keep warm. The mixture of the wrapping and your body heat helps the spa treatment penetrate deep into the skin.
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a beauty treatment designed to scrape dead cells, blemishes and imperfections off your skin. Microdermabrasion is performed using a special tool that propels crystals of aluminum dioxide at the area being treated. This scrapes off the outer layer of skin which not only removes superficial blemishes, but also stimulates new cell growth.
Hair Removal
Whether done manually or by laser, hair removal is another common beauty treatment. Hair removal is typically done around the eyes, lips, chin and bikini line. Laser hair removal continues to grown in popularity. The laser process uses pulsing laser light to destroy the hair follicle. Laser hair removal is a more permanent solution to problem areas of hair growth.
