Gastric bypass surgery changes the capacity of the stomach, altering the digestive system in order to reduce weight, explains MayoClinic.com. A gastric bypass patient must eat small amounts of specific foods for the first few weeks in order to adjust to the changes in his body. The patient will drink small amounts of liquid, but certain liquids may not work well in the weeks after surgery. Soda is one of those drinks that gastric bypass patients must drink with caution. Knowing how to drink soda after this surgery will help a person work these drinks back into his diet.

Step 1

Wait until four to six weeks after surgery before drinking soda. Gastric bypass patients will reach dietary phases at different times, but the stomach will respond best to carbonation around the time a person tolerates solid foods, explains the University of Virginia Health System. The doctor will determine when a person is ready for this stage.

Step 2

Choose diet soda, since the sugars in regular soda may result in "dumping." After gastric bypass, certain food and beverages may move through the intestines quickly, resulting in a period of nausea and diarrhea, says the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview.

Step 3

Dilute soda with water before drinking. This will help a person determine how his body will react to the carbonation. Try half water, half soda, and gradually reduce the amount of water added. If discomfort, pain or other symptoms occur, dilute with more water or wait longer before drinking soda.

Tips and Warnings

  • Water or diluted juice offer better beverage choices after gastric bypass than soda.
  • Resuming sugared, high calorie sodas will add to caloric intake and possibly lead to weight gain instead of weight loss.

Things You'll Need
