Alternative Treatments for Sinus Headaches

Alternative Treatments for Sinus Headaches

When the sinus cavities become swollen and inflamed, one of the most common symptoms is a sinus headache. Sinus headaches can be chronic or acute and often accompany a sinus infection. Inflammation of the sinus cavities prohibits the sinuses from draining, causing mucus to build up in the nasal passages, creating pain or tension in the head. If you suffer from sinus headaches and prefer a natural method of treatment, here are some treatment options to relieve the symptoms of a sinus headache.

Drinking Fluids

Whether you're suffering from a sinus headache or sinus infection, drink at least 64 oz. of fluids, such as water or natural juice. Drinking fluids dilutes mucus and promotes drainage. Avoid caffeine or alcohol because they can cause dehydration and can cause the nasal passages to contract further. The key to alleviating sinus-related symptoms is maintaining moisture.

Steam Treatments

Use steam to promote drainage. Drape a towel over your head while inhaling steam from hot water in a bowl. Consider adding peppermint or eucalyptus oil to the water as a form of aromatherapy. Taking a hot shower can have similar results.

Warm Compresses

Place warm compresses on your face to loosen mucus and help nasal passages drain. Place clean towels in a large bowl of warm water. Squeeze out excess water and place the towels on your face. Leave the towel on until it cools. Repeat as necessary.

Nasal Lavage

Although it requires some preparation, performing nasal lavage can be a more immediate way to relieve your headache. Nasal lavage is the process of draining the nasal passages. Fluid is passed through the nasal passage by introducing the water into the nostril while tilting the head. The water should pass through the nasal cavities and as the water drains out, it should dilute mucus and rinse out your passages or allow you to clear your passages by blowing your nose. Use an over-the-counter product such as Sinus Rinse or a neti pot. Some products include a saline solution, but plain warm water is just as effective.

Considerations While Resting

Sleep with your head elevated to decrease congestion and increase the angle to promote drainage. If needed, take an over-the-counter sinus headache medication such as Aleve or Sudafed. Get plenty of rest to help your body recover and fight off a potential infection that could be causing your headaches.
