People who work feverishly at reducing waistlines need to take a minute to read the fishy facts. Fish oil contains omega-3 acids, which are tied to heart and skin health, decreased depression and a variety of other benefits. A popular benefit from fish oil is the reduction in body fat, especially in the abdominal area. In a 2007 article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, a study reported that fish oil intake, along with regular exercise, reduces body fat and improves cardiovascular health.

What Is Fish Oil?

According to an article from Bodybuilding.com, "fish oil is extracted from oily fish, containing omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA, and docosahexaenoic acid or DHA." These fatty acids are labeled essential fatty acids because they cannot be produced by the body. Getting these nutrients from certain foods and supplements is imperative to gain the benefits from fish oils.

Forms of Fish Oil

Fish oil supplements can be taken a few ways. The most popular is through capsules, which have improved through time due to enteric coating of the capsule. An article on the Omega 3 Fish Oil website explains "nutritional substances and vitamins are broken down by stomach acids, leaving nutrients useless for distribution in the body." Thus, enteric coated capsules prevent breakdown by moving through the stomach so fish oil can be dissolved in the intestines and later released into the body. Healthy Oil Planet explains that "liquid forms of fish oil may contain higher amounts of omega-3." However, even though flavoring is added, liquid forms may be less appealing to the taste. Soft-chew capsules are another option. Always consult your doctor before beginning any supplement regimen.

Recommended Daily Amounts

The National Institute of Health suggests "for weight loss, approximately 3.65 grams of omega-3 fatty acids, 0.66 grams from EPA and 0.60 grams from DHA, are recommended. When shopping for fish oil supplements, ensure these amounts are met by inspecting nutrition labels on products.

Effect on Abdominal Fat

The Healthy Eating Club's website reports "a study conducted by Dr. Allison Hill showed that 6 grams of fish oil that is high in DHA content, taken daily for three months, reduced body fat by 5 percent, especially from the abdominal region." Results showed that the effects only occurred when combined with moderate aerobic exercise for 45 minutes, three times a week.

Not a Magic Bullet

While fish oil supplementation can help with weight loss, supplements alone will not help you achieve fat-loss goals. When the fish oil is incorporated into a consistent exercise and nutrition plan, you can expect better results.
