Nutrition & ADHD in Children

ADHD causes children to exhibit hyperactive and distractable behaviors and is typically treated using pharmaceutical medications. To complement this treatment, or to attempt to treat ADHD naturally, certain nutritional alterations can be made to affect behaviors in children.

Add Flaxseed Oil

Flaxseed oil contains omega fatty acids that help support and nourish the nervous and circulatory systems. Adding flaxseed oil to the diet can improve ADHD behaviors in children, such as hyperactivity.

No Sugars

Sugar causes the blood sugar in the body to spike and drop, which can cause ADHD-like behaviors to surface. Reducing or eliminating sugar in the diet prevents the blood sugar from becoming unbalanced.

No Artificial Additives

Artificial additives, like food coloring or flavorings, can effect the nervous system and can trigger ADHD symptoms. This can lead to distraction and aggression.

Avoid Nitrates and Nitrites

Nitrates and nitrites have been linked to behaviors similar to those associated with ADHD and are usually found in processed meats such as bacon and hot dogs. Avoid all products that contain these additives.

Increase Plant Proteins

Plant proteins help nourish the body and the mind and support the proper functioning of the brain to help alleviate ADHD behaviors. Plant proteins include nuts, seeds and legumes.
