Frizziness is a common hair problem, especially for women with curly or dry hair. Dry hair is more prone to frizziness because it tends to absorb moisture from the environment, which causes swelling and kinking of the hair shaft, according to the Allure Magazine website. Although there are products available to control frizziness, these products require frequent application and some may cause long-term damage to your hair. Proper hair care key to stopping the ends of your hair from being frizzy.

Step 1

Trim your hair every 6 to 8 weeks to remove split ends and improve the overall appearance of your hair. Split ends are more prone to frizzing than healthy hair.

Step 2

Wash your hair less often and use shampoos and conditioners appropriate for your hair type when showering. Concentrate on cleaning your scalp, as this area has the greatest concentration of oil. Leave the conditioner on your hair for at least five minutes before rinsing. If your hair is oily, apply the conditioner only to the ends of your hair. Rinse with cold water to seal your cuticles and help prevent frizz.

Step 3

Use a leave-in conditioner or other hair moisturizer during the day if your hair is dry, but be careful about getting such products on your face and neck, especially if you are prone to acne. Use a hot oil treatment or hair mask once each week and do a deep conditioning treatment once every month.

Step 4

Blot your hair with a towel and then let it air dry. Use a blow dryer only when truly necessary. If you must blow dry your hair, do so on the lowest setting and at a downward angle, and opt for an ionic blow dryer if possible. These blow dryers compress the cuticle and help control frizz, according to the Allure Magazine website.

Step 5

Comb your hair when it is wet or allow it to dry before styling. Brushing your hair when it is wet causes tension on your hair shaft and can lead to breakage, split ends and increased frizz.

Step 6

Use silicone-based styling products to smooth your hair and avoid alcohol-based hair sprays, as these may dry your hair and increase frizziness. The Allure Magazine website cautions that silicone tends to attract dirt and oil and as such, silicone-based products may not work well on oily hair.

Step 7

Stop using chemicals on your hair or at least wait as long as possible between perming, coloring and straightening.

Step 8

Wet your hair before swimming to reduce the amount of chlorine your hair absorbs, and then rinse or wash it immediately after getting out of the water. Use a heat-protective spray before spending time in the sun to protect your hair from the sun's damaging UV rays. Protect your hair from sun, wind and chlorine damage to prevent dryness and control frizz. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services explains that harsh weather can cause frizzing and hair damage.

Step 9

Eat a balanced diet, stop smoking, limit alcohol consumption, get plenty of sleep and exercise, manage stress and get regular medical checkups to improve your overall health and the health of your hair.
