Mixing protein powder with oatmeal is a way of getting the protein you need without consuming the fat and cholesterol that other protein-rich foods contain. According to the author of "Fitness Fast Food," whey protein powder is one of the best sources of protein and it makes an excellent food choice for anyone with a fast-paced lifestyle. Moreover, protein powders are not only fast food for the people who are on the go. The Cancer Treatment Center recommends soy or whey protein powder for patients undergoing chemotherapy and other cancer therapies.

Step 1

Prepare the oats in a bowl. Add oats, protein powder and water. Some people prefer to use water instead of skim milk when preparing the oatmeal, but still pour milk over oatmeal as a topping or as an addition after its finished cooking. Others may prefer to use milk instead of water when cooking. In any case, either choice is suitable for mixing oatmeal and protein powder. Prepare the oatmeal using water or skim milk as usual, unless your doctor or dietitian recommends otherwise.

Step 2

Place the bowl into the microwave and cook for two minutes. Microwave ovens may vary, so increase or decrease cooking time as needed.

Step 3

Add cinnamon to the bowl and stir. Microwave for an additional 30 seconds.

Step 4

Add sugar substitute and skim milk if desired. If you chose to cook the oatmeal with water instead of skim milk, now is the time to add the skim milk.

Step 5

Alternatively, prepare the protein powder with instant oatmeal. Combine one packet of instant oatmeal with one scoop of protein powder into a shaker. Shake well for 20 seconds.

Step 6

Add hot water to the shaker and shake vigorously for one minute.

Step 7

Pour the contents into a bowl. Add milk, berries, vanilla extract, sugar substitute, apple or banana to the oatmeal if desired. Carolyn Katz, author of "The Cancer Nutrition Center Handbook" recommends adding easy to digest items for patients recovering from chemotherapy. Such choices include banana and applesauce for oatmeal toppings. Further, she recommends avoiding lactose, so skip the milk when cooking the oatmeal and protein powder meal.

Tips and Warnings

  • Drink the instant oatmeal and protein powder mix from the shaker instead of pouring it directly into a bowl especially if you do not want to add any toppings to the oatmeal. It becomes a beverage instead of a meal, similar to a thick shake or smoothie. Add more water to the shaker for a thinner consistency, making it easier to drink if desired.
  • Always talk to a dietitian before using protein powder for any meal or beverage if you are undergoing treatment for a serious medical condition.
