Gout can be caused by excessive levels of uric acid in the body. According to Health 911, most uric acid is produced by the body. In order to reduce excess uric acid, you may need to take medication or make dietary changes. Foods that contain purines may increase uric acid levels. By reducing purine-containing foods and choosing appropriate alternatives, you may lower the uric acid in your blood.

Meat And Some Seafoods

According to Herbal Remedies For Gout, foods that are very high in purines should be limited or eliminated altogether from the diet. Purines are chemicals that break down to form uric acid, which contributes to gout attacks. The main food source of purines is meat. Meat includes bacon, ham, beef, pork and steak. Certain types of seafood, such as scallops and anchovies, are also high in purines and should be avoided.

Alcohol And Sea Salt

Alcohol interferes with the removal of uric acid and should be eliminated from the diet. Beer should also be eliminated since it hinders uric acid removal. Wine has less severe effects than alcohol and beer and may be drunk in moderation.

Sea salt may also raise levels of uric acid and should be kept to a minimum. Regular iodized salt has less effect on uric acid levels and can be included in minimal and moderate portions daily.

Foods To Limit, But Not Avoid

According to Health 911, certain foods can still be consumed, but should be monitored to avoid consumption in large quantities. Asparagus, mushrooms and spinach are some vegetables with higher levels of purines. Most types of fish also have moderate purine levels and should be eaten on a limited basis. Small amounts of these foods can be part of a healthy diet. However, by limiting them, you may reduce or prevent gout attacks before they happen.
