Fibromyalgia is a condition that causes sleep disturbances and fatigue, but the most prevalent symptom is widespread pain that is severe enough to interfere with daily activity. There are a number of options used to help relieve the pain of fibromyalgia.
Lyrica
Lyrica (pregabalin) was the first drug to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of fibromyalgia. It helps to ease the pain caused by overactive nerves, according to Lyrica.com.
Analgesics
Analgesics are medications given for pain relief. Depending on the level of pain, analgesics given for fibromyalgia can range from over-the-counter Tylenol (acetaminophen) to prescription drugs like Ultram (tramadol).
NSAIDs
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) are sometimes given for relieving fibromyalgia pain. Ibuprofen and naproxen sodium are available in both prescription and non-prescription strengths.
Antidepressants
Tricyclic antidepressants, serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and mixed reuptake inhibitors are useful in reducing fibromyalgia pain, according to the National Fibromyalgia Association. Multiple types of antidepressants are sometimes given in combination.
Muscle Relaxants
Muscle relaxants, often Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine), are given to help with fibromyalgia muscle pain. They can also help improve sleep, according to Arthritis.org.
Non-Drug Treatments
In addition to medication, exercise, physical therapy and biofeedback can be helpful tools for pain relief of fibromyalgia. Massage therapy, acupuncture and chiropractic therapy are also sometimes used.
