The skin is the largest organ of the body. It makes up 15 percent of your body weight. It is made up of three layers -- the epidermis, the dermis and the sub-dermis. Pores cover the body's surface and help with temperature regulation. Large pores and blackheads on the face are not uncommon but can be treated.

Large Pores

According to Doc Shop, large pores are caused by either age or heredity. If you have inherited skin that is oily you will probably have large pores that are clearly visible. Even if you do not have oily skin, your pores may become enlarged as you grow older. This can be caused by sun damage and reduced collagen in the skin, which causes the skin to lose its elasticity. As you grow older, your skin will thicken slightly, causing pores to appear larger.

Blackheads

Doc Shop, explains that blackheads may also make pores appear larger. A blackhead is formed when pores become blocked by oil and bacteria. As this accumulates, the pore will expand and a small blackhead will appear on the surface of the skin. Blackheads should not be squeezed, as this will inflame the skin even more.

Skin Products

According to The Daily Glow, using the right skin cleansers is essential to reduce open pores and prevent blackheads. Skin products than contain glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid are most beneficial if you have oily skin. These substances will help to remove excess grease from the skin without drying it out. If you do need a moisturizer, use aloe vera as this will prevent dry skin without leaving a greasy film on the skin's surface.

Cleanse and Tone

The Daily Glow also recommends that you wash and tone your face daily to clear pores and prevent oily buildup. Another good strategy is to steam your face. This will open your pores and remove oily blockages. Rubbing your face with lemon juice after steaming will also help to reduce the size of your pores.

Natural Remedies

Acne Talk recommends a number of natural remedies and herbs you can use to make poultices or face packs that will help remove blackheads and shrink pores. These include fenugreek, baking soda and water, coriander leaves, radish seeds, honey, Epsom salts and even potatoes.
