Ping pong is a low-impact competitive sport that prevents stress on your knees and hips. Avid players often refer to ping pong as table tennis due to the fact that the ping pong table consists of a scaled-down model of the conventional tennis court. Having a ping pong table in your home remains a great way to have competitions with your family and friends. Following the proper table instructions will ensure you can easily identify the winner of each match.
Step 1
Walk to either side of your home ping pong table. Flip a coin to determine which player will serve first. Place the ping pong ball into the palm of your nondominant hand if you win the toss of the coin. Take a playing position on the right side of the line that divides the middle of your home ping pong table.
Step 2
Hold your ping pong paddle in your dominant hand while waiting for your opponent to take his proper position behind the table. Toss the ball out of your palm at least 6 inches into the air. Hit the ball onto your side of the table with a forward swing from your paddle.
Step 3
Watch the ball as it bounces off of the playing table, over the net, and onto your opponent's side. Extend your right foot behind you to take a step backwards from the ping pong table. Lift your paddle as you wait for your opponent to return the ball. Hold your paddle to the side of your body while hitting the ball, performing the forehand technique.
Step 4
Extend the paddle across your body while hitting the ball to execute a backhanded stroke. Strike the ball into the corner of the table to prevent your opponent from returning the shot, and to score one point. Rotate to the left side of the table for your second service attempt. Serve the ball five times before allowing your opponent to serve.
Step 5
Strike the ball back to your opponent's side during her service attempts using the forehand or backhand stroke. Continue to rotate serving and returning until either you or your opponent has acquired 11 points and wins the game. You must have two more points than your opponent to win. Switch to the opposite side of your home ping pong table for each additional game.
