Alpha hydroxy acid is often included in skin care ingredients because of its ability to speed exfoliation. Quicker exfoliation of skin cells smooths the look of fine lines and wrinkles, improves skin's texture, and unblocks pores. While effective, alpha hydroxy acid can cause irritation and make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Use care while applying products that contain alpha hydroxy acid to minimize the potential side effects of the product.
Step 1
Read labels before purchasing products with alpha hydroxy acids. The FDA recommends choosing products with less than 10 percent concentration of alpha hydroxy acid. This minimizes the risk of developing uncomfortable side effects.
Step 2
Apply product according to package directions. Alpha hydroxy acid is included in cleansers and moisturizers. If you are using a cleanser, wet face and apply a dime-sized amount of cleanser to your face. Massage in thoroughly, avoiding the eye area. Rinse face and pat dry. If you are using an moisturizer, apply a dime-sized amount to your face after washing. Rub in gently, again, avoiding the area around the eyes.
Step 3
Smooth sunscreen over skin. Alpha hydroxy acid makes the skin more sensitive to the sun, so it is important to wear sunscreen every time you leave the house, even if it is overcast.
Step 4
Watch for signs of irritation. Itching, peeling, burning and redness are all signs of irritation. If your skin becomes irritated by alpha hydroxy acid products, stop using the product until your skin clears up. When you resume using the product, apply every other day for several days. Gradually increase the frequency of application until you are using the product as recommended on the label.
