Safety is always a concern when you engage in bicycling. Each year more than 500,000 emergency room visits and more than 700 deaths are related to bicycle accidents. Bike safety is for adults and children alike. Knowing you are minimizing your risk of injury will bring confidence and peace of mind during your ride.

Helmets

Helmets have been shown to reduce death or head injuries by up to 85 percent. You need to wear a helmet every time you get on a bike. Accidents happen anywhere, anytime. It is necessary to have a helmet that fits correctly. Helmets should sit low on your forehead. Chin straps need to be snug enough that when you open your jaw the helmet exerts pressure on the forehead. If not, tighten the straps.

Be Seen

You will be easier for motorists and others to see if you choose clothing that is bright or fluorescent in color. Reflective tape and clothing also make you more visible. If you must ride at night, use front and rear lights and reflectors on the bike.

Bike Maintenance

Keep your bike in top working order and make sure that the brakes and gears are working properly. Check your bike before each ride to find anything that may cause you problems out on the road. Always keep tire change tools and an extra tube with you when you ride.

Rules of the Road

Bicyclists are expected to behave the same as a motorist. You are under the same obligation to yield to pedestrians, stop at stop signs and lights, signal when turning, and ride with traffic. Learn the rules of the road and obey them.

Electronic Devices

Avoid listening to music while riding your bike. It is much safer to hear what is going on around you. You will be better able to react to situations that arise and respond to traffic conditions. Both hands are needed to brake suddenly, so it is also a bad idea to talk on the phone or text while biking.
