Whether you want to get in some lake fishing and water skiing in the middle of the summer or be near ice fishing and sledding during the winter, the Buckeye State features RV, tent and cottage camping all over the state. Travelers have the option of camping near one of the Great Lake, Lake Erie, in the northern part of the state, as well as camping near lakes, ponds and rivers in the other parts of the state.
Toledo Area
Near Toledo in Oregon along Lake Erie, Maumee Bay State Park offers campsites and cottage camping on and near the lake. It features more than 250 campsites with electrical hookups, accessible to fishing ponds, a playground, biking and walking trails, recreational areas and sporting equipment rentals. The park also offers 24 cottages near a golf course that are outfitted with gas fireplaces, full kitchens and up to four bedrooms. Pets are permitted at both types of locations. The park also features boating, swimming, hunting, winter sports and a nature center.
Marblehead Peninsula
On the Marblehead Peninsula in northern Ohio along Lake Erie east of Toledo, you can camp at Lake Erie Islands State Park, comprised of six park areas. The parks offer more than 200 electric and nonelectric campsites, accessible to recreation areas and playgrounds, hiking trails, picnic areas, fishing, hunting, swimming and boat rentals. At the 1,831-acre East Harbor State Park, nearly 600 electric, nonelectric and full-hookup campsites are available near boating, fishing, hunting, swimming, picnic areas, disc golf, winter sports, recreational areas and seasonal events.
Other Lake Erie Spots
In northeast Ohio along Lake Erie, you can camp at Camper Village at Cedar Point Resorts in Sandusky. There RV campers will have electric, water, sewer and cable hookups near a beach. The facility features seasonal pool swimming and a whirlpool, recreation areas and a game room and seasonal packages near the resort amusement park. At Geneva State Park, nearly 89 electric, nonelectric and full-hookup sites are offered in addition to the lodge and conference center's facilities. Boating, swimming, fishing, hunting, biking and hiking trails and seasonal water sports are available. Nearby is Geneva Marina.
Western Ohio
In western Ohio, you can stay at campgrounds near a couple of large lakes. Indian Lake State Park in Lakeview offers more than 400 campsites with electrical or full hookups. Beach and boat ramps and docks are available on the 5,800-acre lake. Cabin and boat camping also is available. At Grand Lake St. Marys State Park in St. Marys, about 200 campsites and cabins are available, most with electrical hookups around the 13,500-acre lake. Both parks offer fishing, hunting, water and winter sports, picnic areas and biking and walking trails.
Other Lake Camping
In northeast Ohio near Amish farms and neighborhoods, you can camp at 100-acre Lake Wapusun Campground, offering 400 wooded campsites and cottages with picnic areas, a general store, paved roads, family activities, playgrounds, fishing in five lakes, swimming, recreational areas, boating and nearby golfing and horseback riding. In northwest Ohio, Hidden Lake Campground offers nearly 140 RV campsites and a tent area surrounding a three-acre pond with fishing and a beach. The facility also features a playground, baseball and basketball areas, a volleyball and horseshoe pit and a recreation hall.
Ohio River
In southern Ohio, campers can stay along the Ohio River at the Kentucky border. White Oak Creek Marina & Campground in Higginsport has nearly 150 campsites with water, electric and cable television hookups. The facility features boat slips and storage, ramps, boat rentals, a restaurant and a playground. Brush Creek Campground in Manchester also offers sites with water and electrical hookups in shaded and open areas, several along Brush Creek near the Ohio River. It features fishing, boating and a boat launch, fire rings and a store.
