According to Essence magazine, black people often have a more difficult time growing long hair than other ethnic groups. Whether you cut your hair short or just want it to grow out longer and stronger, you can use at-home treatments to achieve this. Repair any damage done to your hair and scalp by chemical treatments or harsh heat styling, and then maintain the health of your locks thereafter. Encourage them to grow with moisturizing, strengthening products, and with daily care and maintenance, you will be on your way to longer hair in no time.

Step 1

Wash your hair every other day with a repairing shampoo. According to Essence, black people need to shampoo their hair often because a buildup of dead skin on the scalp can clog hair follicles and inhibit growth. Wet your head and massage the shampoo into your hair and scalp. Scrub your scalp with the pads of your fingers to get rid of any oil or buildup, and rinse thoroughly to avoid any residue.

Step 2

Squeeze the excess water from your hair, and smooth on a conditioner. Cosmopolitan recommends looking for one with shea butter or avocado oil, ingredients that will deeply moisturize your locks. San Francisco dermatologist Paradi Mirmirani says that keeping your hair nourished is essential for helping it grow, because dried-out strands can break before they have a chance to get long. Coat your hair with conditioner and let it set in for a few minutes, then wash it out.

Step 3

Spray your hair with a heat-shielding product if you blow dry, according to Cosmopolitan. This will help prevent any breakage or split ends that heat styling can cause. Spray the product all over your damp hair, and comb it through with a wide-toothed comb. Do not tug on any knots or tangles, which can cause your strands to break.

Step 4

Apply a hair oil or gloss that contains lavender, which Essence says will stimulate hair growth, as well as lock in moisture. Place a small amount of the product in your palms and rub it through your hair from the roots to the tips.

Step 5

Take vitamins B, C, or flax seed oil once a day to promote hair growth, says hairstylist Amoy Pitters. Ask your doctor before you begin taking any new supplements.

Step 6

Restore your hair and promote new growth by applying a deep conditioning treatment once a week. Look for a product that promises to repair any damage and infuse your locks with moisture to prevent split ends and breakage. Smooth the product through your hair, and allow it to absorb for several minutes before rinsing it out.
