The Vicks V934 baby thermometer is intended for rectal use and is approved for use with all ages, including newborns. The V934 thermometer, which is digital and waterproof, has a short, flexible tip for safe rectal use and performs a reading in 10 seconds. The thermometer beeps when the reading is complete and stores the reading in its memory for last reading recall. Digital thermometers record temperatures by using electronic heat sensors and are considered the most accurate way to take the temperature of infants and children who cannot safely use an oral thermometer, according to MayoClinic.com.
Step 1
Turn on the thermometer by pressing the on/off button on the side of the unit. The V934 baby thermometer beeps and shows "LCD test" in the display area, after which the last reading taken is displayed.
Step 2
Wait for 5 seconds to use the V934 thermometer. You can use the rectal thermometer when the unit displays in the LCD area a series of dashes: "---."
Step 3
Place the probe cover over the tip of the rectal thermometer and apply water-soluble jelly to the tip for lubrication.
Step 4
Lay an adult or child on her side or lay your infant on her stomach across your knees or on a changing table with her legs hanging down.
Step 5
Spread the subject's buttocks and insert the tip of the rectal thermometer into the rectum no more than 1/2 inch. If you are taking your child's temperature, hold her still so her movements do not push the thermometer in further.
Step 6
Listen for 10 beep signals to sound from the thermometer and watch for the "F" sign to stop flashing in the display area before reading the temperature in the display area.
Step 7
Press the on-off button to turn off the thermometer, wash the thermometer well using the instructions provided in the product packaging and store the thermometer as instructed.
