Dry, brittle nails crack, split and break off at the tips. The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that brittle nails are often the natural result of aging. Thyroid problems and other diseases can also lead to brittle nails, so see your doctor to rule out these causes. Since brittle nails are more fragile, take extra precautions to protect and care for them.

Step 1

Soak nails in warm water for several minutes. Or address nail care right after your bath or shower. Soaking softens the nails and makes it easier to care for them without damaging them, according to MayoClinic.com.

Step 2

Trim nails with sharp nail scissors. Smooth the edges with an emery board. This will help prevent snagging and tearing. MayoClinic.com recommends you keep your nails shorter so they'll be less likely to break at the tips.

Step 3

Rub moisturizing lotion into your nails every day. This helps moisturize your nails and cuticles.

Step 4

Apply nail polish to your nails. Nail polish helps seal in moisture and strengthen the nail, reports MayoClinic.com. Remove the polish and reapply once a week.

Step 5

Take 2.5 mg of biotin daily. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, biotin, a B vitamin, strengthens brittle nails.

Tips and Warnings

  • MayoClinic.com says nail hardeners may help, but avoid any that contain formaldehyde or toluene sulfonamide, since these chemicals can be irritating. Use acetone-free nail polish remover.
