Preparing breakfast and making sure the kids eat it in the morning can be a difficult chore for parents. Helping children start their day off right with a healthy breakfast is an important part of helping children develop good eating habits. Skipping breakfast or having an unhealthy breakfast can lead to childhood obesity, which is a growing problem in the United States.

Variety is Key

Prepare a breakfast that includes a variety of items from each food group. Whole grains, dairy, protein, fruits and vegetables should be on the breakfast plate. Every meal should contain options from the different food groups to make sure that children get the nutrition that they need.

Have Quick Options Available

Getting the kids changed and ready for school on top of putting breakfast together can seem impossible on some mornings. Having quick and nutritious breakfast options available is important. Keep fruit, yogurt, low-fat cheese and milk, whole grain cereal and trail mix in the house to use on those days when preparing something hot is not an option.

Make it a Habit

Making a habit out of breakfast is an important way to make sure that this meal is not skipped. If children get used to not eating breakfast, they may not be hungry or used to eating in the morning and they may learn to skip it as a result. Unfortunately, many children and adults get into the habit of skipping breakfast, which is bad for their weight control and may push them to make unhealthy food choices later in the day. Children's parents should be good role models and take care of their own health. Eating breakfast together is a great way to start the day.

Breakfast to Go

If a busy morning schedule does not permit sitting down to eat breakfast, some parents may need to give their kids breakfast to go. A breakfast bar that has whole grains and fruit in the middle is one option. A peanut butter sandwich and a milk box, yogurt in a squeeze container and some fruit, or trail mix in a bag are some ideas.

Stay Motivated

Parents need to remember that children who do not eat breakfast may be sluggish in school, have a poor attention span, or not do well in school. Remembering the facts about the importance of breakfast is a way that parents can remain motivated to give their child a healthy breakfast every day.
