Living on a tight budget can be difficult and, unfortunately, good nutrition can suffer as a result. Eating a healthy breakfast is an important factor in preventing obesity because it fills you up early in the day, thereby making it less likely you will make unhealthy food choices because you are very hungry.

Yogurt, Cereal and Fruit

Buy a large container of low fat yogurt for the week. A large container of yogurt is enough for several breakfasts and is usually cheaper than yogurt in individual containers. Put some yogurt in a bowl and top with a whole-grain cereal that is low in added sugar. Bran cereals with raisins are a good choice. Add some chopped seasonal fruit, such as a banana or berries.

Smoothies

Smoothies are simple and don't have to cost a lot of money. Look for packages of frozen fruit, such as strawberries or blueberries, when they go on sale. Put a handful of frozen fruit into a blender. Add a banana and some yogurt and a little bit of soy milk. Be creative.

Egg Sandwich

Eggs are not that expensive, and are healthy. Take two egg whites and fry them on a nonstick pan with some cooking spray. Top the egg whites with low fat mozzarella cheese. Put the mixture in a small piece of pita bread, a small tortilla or on one slice of whole wheat toast. Add a little salsa for flavor.

Egg Omelet

Omelets may seem fancy, but they are simple, easy and cheap to make. Use three egg whites and fry them on a nonstick pan with some cooking spray. Add some finely-chopped onion, tomato or peppers. Season with salt and pepper. Top with low-fat shredded mozzarella cheese and fold in half when the egg is set.

Oatmeal

Getting a big carton of oatmeal is a cheaper alternative than individual packets. Cook according to the directions and add some seasonal fruit and low-fat milk. Oatmeal is a whole-grain cereal packed with fiber, making it is a healthy and filling breakfast option.

Low-Fat Cottage Cheese

Buy a large container of low-fat cottage cheese. This is cheaper than buying the individual containers sold in the grocery store. Top with seasonal fruit for a breakfast packed with protein.
