How to Troubleshoot a ProForm Elliptical 785F

The ProForm 785F elliptical is a fitness machine designed to provide a cardiovascular workout through a combination of pedaling motions and arm exercises. The 785F consists of a control console mounted onto a base unit; as you pedal the machine, a special sensor called a "reed switch" keeps track the crank pulley's revolutions and relays data to the console. A drive belt connecting the crank pulley to a flywheel provides resistance during the workout.

Drive Belt

Step 1

Kneel down next to the right side of the elliptical's base. Use a flathead screwdriver to turn the right disc shield to the left until it comes free of the base. Slide the shield free of the pedal arms and set it aside.

Step 2

Inspect the interior of the base unit and locate the drive belt, crank pulley and flywheel. Insert the end of the hex wrench into the bolt set in the center of the flywheel's mounting bracket. Turn the bolt to the left to loosen it, but do not remove the bolt completely.

Step 3

Inspect the left side of the mounting bracket and locate the attached screw. Turn the screw to the right to tighten the drive belt. Rotate the crank pulley by hand to confirm that the belt will move as desired, then tighten the bolt set in the center of the flywheel's mounting bracket.

Step 4

Slide the right disc shield back into its original location. Align the mounting points on the shield with those on the right side of the base unit. Turn the shield to the right until it is secure.

Reed Switch

Step 1

Kneel down next to the left side of the elliptical's base. Use a flathead screwdriver to turn the left disc shield to the left until it comes free of the base. Slide the shield free of the pedal arms and set it aside.

Step 2

Inspect the interior of the base unit and find the reed switch, located next to the hub of the crank pulley. Turn the crank pulley by hand until a small magnet comes into view. Position the magnet next to the reed switch.

Step 3

Loosen the screw securing the ends of the switch bracket together. Slide the reed switch towards the magnet, allowing enough space between the switch and the magnet to prevent accidental contact.

Step 4

Turn the crank pulley by hand and examine the display on the console unit. If necessary, move the reed switch further away from the magnet until the display is working as desired. Tighten the screw securing the ends of the switch bracket together.

Step 5

Slide the left disc shield back into its original location. Align the mounting points on the shield with those on the left side of the base unit. Turn the shield to the right until it is secure.
