Joining a sports team can be a challenge for a homosexual, bisexual or transgendered individual. That person might feel uncomfortable or in the minority. If that is the case, there are plenty of opportunities in the Forest Hills area to join a sports club where you will not be judged.
Membership
You do not necessarily have to be a homosexual in order to join one of these gay sports clubs. However, you do need to be open and accepting to homosexuals. Gay sports clubs are also open to bisexual, transvestite or transgender individuals. In general, they are open to anyone regardless of sexual orientation, but they were especially started for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community.
Running
One of the biggest movements for the homosexual community near Forest Hills is the running club. Consider checking out the New York Front Runners for an opportunity to participate in cross country meets, standard track races and the annual Pride Run, which is a 5-mile run through Central Park. With over 600 members from all the boroughs, you will have plenty of opportunities to network with other individuals and to support your teammate's running habits.
Traditional Sports
When we think of sports, there are a few that immediately come to mind. No matter what your level of skill is, try joining the New York City Gay Hockey League. Games are played weekly at Chelsea Piers Sky Rink. If you are interested in basketball but have not played before, head to a beginner's clinic sponsored by the New York City Gay Basketball League. Gay men might enjoy the New York Ramblers soccer team. Other opportunities such as softball and football are available as well.
Other Sports
While the most popular sports are available, you certainly are not limited to them. Head north to Westchester with a group of people from the area for a rock climbing expedition. Join Cheer New York where you will perform your cheerleading routines at a range of athletic events throughout the boroughs. If you love the water, you could join the aquatics team who has played at the Gay Games, or you could sign up for the diving team.
Behind the Scenes
Maybe you do not want to actually play a sport, but you still want to be involved in athletic opportunities for the gay community. Individuals interested in working behind the scenes with sports can join Out of Bounds, which helps to promote the gay athletic community. They educate the rest of the community and provide support for the teams involved in the various leagues.
