If basketball practice has been getting a little boring for your players, you may be looking for new drills to implement the next time you step out on the court. Half-court drills are an effective way to split up your team into groups and have one group practice a skill on one side of the court while the other group tries out a different drill on the other side.
Half-Court Drive and Dish Drill
This 3-on-3 drill helps the offense develop the ability to drive the lane and dish off to an opponent, while at the same time teaching the defense the importance of off-ball defense. Direct three offensive players to take their places, one at the top of the key with the ball, the other two on either side of the lane near the baseline. The three defensive players position themselves with two on either elbow of the lane and one in the middle of the lane under the basket. On the whistle, the player with the ball dribbles to the middle of the lane as the two defensive players on the elbows try to trap him. After they trap, the player with the ball dishes it off to the player near the basket who is open. The defensive player in the middle of the lane must defend the pass then rotate to the player who catches the ball. The player receiving the ball passes or shoots. Repeat the drill if the shot goes in. If the shot misses, the team that rebounds the ball repeats the drill as the offensive team.
Half-Court Shootout
This drill helps players develop shooting skills. Divide your team in half and have each group stand behind the half-court line facing opposite baskets. On the whistle, the first player must dribble to the basket and execute the following shots in no particular order: a layup, a bank shot from outside the lane, a free throw and a 3-pointer. After completing all four shots, the player dribbles back to the line and passes the ball to the next player in line. The first team to have all players finish the drill wins.
3-on-3 Half Court Passing Drill
If you're looking to improve your team's half-court passing skills or give your defense a challenge, try this passing drill. Divide your team into four three-man teams, with two teams on each half of the court. Pick one team on each side to be offense and the other defense. The offensive team must execute 10 passes in the half court without turning the ball over. Players must cut, fake their opponents and screen to get open. Have teams switch from offense to defense after the offense either executes its 10 passes or turns the ball over.
