Signs & Symptoms of Depression in Males

Depression is a disease of the brain that affects nearly 6 million men in the United States each year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. The condition crosses all ages, professions and socio-economic borders. Serious illness, family history, stress and loss of a loved one can trigger depression in males. The length, severity and number of symptoms vary among individuals.

Sadness

An overwhelming feeling of sadness that won't go away is a common sign of depression.The sadness leaves patients feeling anxious and empty.

Decreased Energy

A common symptom of depression is a lack of energy and motivation. Movements become slower and patients feel fatigued, no matter how much rest they receive.

Lack of Interest

Men often lose interest in activities they previously enjoyed. They lose interest in sex and don't want to see anyone or do anything.

Sleep Changes

Sleep patterns often change in depressed men. While some men want to sleep all the time, others are awakened with racing thoughts and can't get back to sleep.

Worthless Feelings

Feelings of guilt and worthlessness are common among depressed males. They often express their thoughts by putting themselves down and talking about personal failures. Depressed men may consider suicide.

Diet Changes

Men going through depression often change their eating habits. Eating more or less than before, they may lose or gain weight rapidly.
