What Are the Ingredients in Adipex-P?

Adipex-P is a medication prescribed to those suffering with obesity with a significant risk of hypertension, high cholesterol or diabetes. It works by suppressing the appetite and is chemically similar to amphetamines, which can be habit-forming. To garner the effects, users must take Adipex while on a low-calorie diet that includes a regular fitness regimen. Adipex is available as a tablet and capsule, which contain several ingredients.

Phentermine Hydrochloride

Phentermine hydrochloride is the active ingredient present in Adipex with both the capsule or tablet containing 37.5mg of the compound, according to DailyMed, a publication of the National Institutes of Health. It is an anoretic agent, meaning it reduces hunger cravings resulting in weight loss. DailyMed says that obese people taking phetermine hydrochloride are more likely to lose weight than those who use diet alone.

Inactive Ingredients in Tablets

The tablet form of Adipex contains several inactive ingredients, many of which are filler and coloring agents. The items include cornstarch, magnesium stearate, cellulose, sucrose, lactose, FD&C Blue #1 and pre-gelatinized starch, according to RX List. The Food and Drug Administration says that the tablet form of Adipex has no known or suspected bioequivalence problems.

Inactive Ingredients in Capsules

Although the capsule for of Adipex contains the active ingredient phetermine hydrochloride, it does not have the same inactive compounds. These ingredients include the coloring agents FD&C blue #1, red #40 and red #33, according to DailyMed. Mangesium stearate, titanium dioxide, black iron oxide, cornstarch, gelatin and monohydrate lactose are also present. The capsule itself is gelatin-based and quickly dissolves.
