A proper skin-care routine that fits your skin's needs improves the way your skin looks and its health, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. The facial cleanser is a key element in the skin-care routine, but with so many options available, sifting through all of them can be a challenge.

Skin Type

Your skin type affects your selection of facial cleansers. Choose a product meant specifically for your skin. Your skin provides clues about your skin type if you are unsure, according to Consumer Reports. Uncomfortable reactions, such as itching, tightening or burning, after washing your face indicates sensitive skin. If your skin becomes shiny about two hours after washing, you likely have oily skin. If your pores are difficult to see by the day's end, you most likely have dry skin.

Water-soluble cleaners work well for oily skin because they remove the oil without decreasing moisture, according to Consumer Search. Those with dry or sensitive skin should choose a mild facial cleanser with fewer chemicals.

Function

Facial cleansers remove cosmetics and dirt from the face. A quality cleanser removes these things from your face without a lot of scrubbing. Your face should feel clean after using your facial cleanser.

Types

In addition to skin type varieties, facial cleansers come in different forms. Liquid and cream-style cleansers are common options available in all price ranges. Some have extra foaming, which probably won't make your face any cleaner than a regular cleanser. Exfoliating beads also are an option in some facial cleansers. For more convenience, some brands offer pads or cloths with the cleanser in them. You moisten the pad to activate the cleanser and wash your face.

Considerations

Price is a consideration for many consumers. Consider how long a container of cleanser will last compared to the cost to determine the value of the purchase. Expensive does not necessarily mean better when it comes to facial cleansers. The scent of the cleanser is also a consideration, especially if strong scents bother you.

Warning

If you have extremely sensitive skin, choose your facial cleanser with caution. Some cleansers can cause a reaction that includes redness, stinging or inflammation. Fragrance-free cleansers are the best option if you have sensitive skin. Consumer Reports notes that unscented cleansers actually might contain fragrances to eliminate chemical scents.
