The landscape of Ohio provides an ideal backdrop for people seeking outdoor adventure. With its moderate year-round precipitation, tenting in Ohio is a logical choice year-round, but camping during the winter months is rare, due to a cold climate. Summer camping, however, is extremely popular. With 312 miles of coastline along Lake Erie, one of the state's most common camping destinations, finding a spot to camp at night and set out on the lake in the day shouldn't be a problem. But, the Ohio camping adventure extends throughout the state.

Lake Erie

Northwest Ohio sits at the edge of one of the country's largest lakes, and there are widespread camping opportunities on the coastline of this remarkable body of water. For whatever type of camping equipment you use -- be it RV, camper, tent, or otherwise -- Lake Erie has places for you to feel at ease on your adventure. Or, if your looking for a bit of excitement on your trip, there is an assortment of recreational activities nearby.

Recreation Along Lake Erie

Many of the campgrounds along the lake are close to shops and family restaurants, as well as to golf courses and boat rentals. Families can visit the Cedar Point Amusement Park, Monsoon Lagoon, the Prehistoric Forest, Mystery Hill and the African Wildlife Safari, all within reach of the Lake Erie coastline.

State Parks

Camping for the entire family is available in 56 state parks in Ohio. These parks provide habitat for protected wildlife, increasing your chance of spotting some of the many moose, deer, rabbits and bears that roam the Ohio landscape. The park campgrounds are also patrolled by rangers, adding to the safety and cleanliness of each site. Both electric and non-electric campsites are available, offering either 20-amp, 30-amp or 50-amp service. Many of these campgrounds also provide showers and laundry facilities. The park campgrounds often offer fun and educational naturalist sessions during the summer.

Fishing

Fishing enthusiasts can visit Lake Nipissing along Highway 654. The fishing action is plentiful in this 337-square-mile lake, with plenty of walleye, bass, pike and "muskie." The beauty of the lake attracts swarms of people, so make sure you reserve a camping spot. Nature surrounds most of the lake, with little development to be seen anywhere. If you don't have a boat, rentals can be made at various outlets along the shoreline, including places at the campgrounds. Ohio fishing licenses for people ages 16 to 65 cost $19 per year. All licenses are effective from March 1 to Feb. 28. Please see the Resources section for a link to where you can purchase your fishing license and get other information.

Things to Remember

Campers should make reservations before setting out on their adventure, especially during the busy summer months. While reservations aren't required, you can book up to six months in advance. Check-in is any time after 3 p.m. and checkout is by 1 p.m. Water and restrooms are available on site, as well as a parking spot, fire pit and fire ring. Generally, the equivalent of two cars can fit in the parking space at the campsite. Up to six people can be accommodated at each site. Please see the resources section for a link to the Camp Lake Erie website to book a campground and to get additional information.
