Information on Medicines for Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is, technically speaking, a syndrome--a cluster of symptoms with no known cause. Symptoms may include fatigue; sleep problems; stiffness and pain, especially at specific trigger points in the body; anxiety; and depression. While there is no known cure, medication is just one of many treatment options for fibromyalgia.

OTC Pain Relievers

Over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen may help reduce the pain and stiffness associated with fibromyalgia.

Prescription Drug

You may be prescribed Tramadol, marketed as Ultram, for pain relief.

Antidepressants

Antidepressant drugs such as fluoxetine, duloxetine and milnacipran may be prescribed to help treat fibromyalgia symptoms or to help the patient sleep.

Epilepsy Medications

Some epilepsy medications, such as gabapentin and pregabalin, may help reduce the pain associated with fibromyalgia.

Combining Medications

Medications may be combined to provide effective fibromyalgia treatment, but this should always be done under a doctor's care, as combining medications may produce unexpected side effects.
