Potassium is an important mineral in the body needed to control electrolyte balance. It regulates the heart and the contraction of muscles. Low potassium may lead to fatigue, poor concentration, heart irregularities and poor muscle coordination. Several foods and drinks are rich in potassium including vegetables, meat, poultry and certain juices.
Meat and Dairy
Good sources of potassium include meats, fish, poultry and dairy. According to the Linus Pauling Institute fish such as salmon, cod and flounder are high in potassium. White-meat chicken, cod, halibut and sirloin steak also contain healthy doses of potassium. Good dairy sources include cheddar cheese and yogurt.
Vegetables
Vegetables offer a good amount of potassium. The American Heart Association recommends adding a variety of vegetables and beans to your daily diet. Good sources include lima beans, tomatoes and sweet potatoes. Potatoes with skin on contain more potassium than those without the skin. Other sources include avocado, asparagus, pumpkin and mushrooms.
Juices
Juices may also be a good source of potassium. The Linus Pauling Institute recommends that fruit juice such as grape, prune, orange, apple and tomato are good sources of potassium. The juices that offer the most potassium include orange and prune. Milk also provides potassium. Skim milk offers more potassium with 426 mg per 1-cup serving than does low-fat or whole milk.
