History
Pelican Lake history dates back 10,000 years when caribou and mastodon roamed the earth in all its beauty. Fur trading was a major industry until the discovery of iron ore in 1865. In 1890, the first sawmills were built in what is now known as Orr, Minnesota and logging became the main industry in Orr. When the logging industry dissipated in the 1930s, Orr relied on tourism.
Climate
Pelican Lake temperatures in the summer can reach up to 84 degrees Fahrenheit. Winter lows can fall to a frigid minus 4.6 degrees Fahrenheit. On average, Pelican Lake experiences 197 sunny days a year compared to the U.S. national average of 205 days a year. The comfort index, based on humidity during the summer months, averages around 50 compared to a U.S. index of 44.
Fishing
According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, or the MN DNR, Pelican Lake is known for first-rate walleye, northern pike, and bluegill fish. Data gathered by the MN DNR show that these species of fish are plentiful in Pelican Lake. The lake is also known for the trophy muskellunge, a large, elusive fish. To ensure quality-sized fish year-round, the MN DNR suggests you practice selective harvesting.
Activities
Lake activities include swimming, hiking, biking, and fly-in-fishing. If nature exploration is not what you seek, spend the day golfing or take a float plane to Canada for a day of shopping. Winter activities include cross-country skiing, ice fishing, and snowmobiling. Norway Point Resort has over 500 miles of wooded and lake trails.
Camping and Lodging
You can camp on the lake shore or rent a cabin at one of several resorts that line the lake. Some resort amenities include fully-furnished rooms and boat rental. Along with fully-furnished lodging, other resorts offer RV hookups, cable television, wired and wireless Internet access, and an indoor heated pool. Birch Forest Lodge provides satellite television, a game room, and fully furnished cabin complete with cooking utensils, dish detergent, toilet paper, and garbage bags.
