Healthy Breakfast Ideas for Teens

When teens consume healthy breakfasts, they get their metabolism working and provide their body with energy to successfully begin the day, notes the MayoClinic.com. Healthy breakfasts need to contain whole grains, fruits, proteins and/or fiber. Teens should stay away from breakfast foodss that contain a significant amount of sugar such as cereals with added sugar and breakfast pastries. There are many healthy breakfasts that teens will enjoy eating.

Cereal Mix

A cereal mix put in a zippered bag can be a healthy way for teens to take their breakfast with them as they rush to school. Disney Family Fun suggests combining a 1/2 cup of a whole grain cereal with 1/4 cup of nuts and 1/4 cup of dried fruit. Teens can choose the type of whole grain cereal, nuts and dried fruit they want to use.

The mix of whole grains, protein and fruit will provide the teens with an assortment of vitamins and minerals and a rich amount of fiber and protein. The fiber and protein contained in this breakfast will provide teens with the necessary energy to start the day.

Fruit Burrito

Teens can make a breakfast burrito out of a healthy whole grain tortilla. In the burrito teens can put in low fat cream cheese and an assortment or berries. Teens can also spread peanut butter into the burrito and add in banana slices. To melt the peanut butter, they can warm the burrito in the microwave, being careful not to overcook the burrito.

The fruit in the burrito will provide teens with healthy fiber and it will help ensure that they consume all the necessary daily servings of fruit. The whole grain tortilla will increase the fiber in the teen's breakfast and the cream cheese or peanut butter filling will provide teens with protein, a valuable energy source.

Egg Whites with Soy Links

Eggs offer teens a good source of protein, but the whole egg contains a significant amount of cholesterol. Discovery Health website reports that by removing the yolk from the egg and only eating the egg white, an egg will be reduced from 250 mg of cholesterol to 40 mg of cholesterol. Teens can eat egg whites scrambled or made into a vegetable omelet.

Eating eggs with soy sausage links instead of meat-based sausage links will reduce the amount of saturated fat and cholesterol in a teen's breakfast. Soy sausage links can be found in the frozen foods sections of most grocery stores and they still contain a significant amount of protein.

Adding 1/2 cup of berries to this meal will increase the fiber content and help ensure a teen's daily servings of fruit are met.
