Cybex machines are manufactured by Cybex Internationl, Inc. Most Cybex workout equipment falls into the category of club quality, though some machines are priced toward the upper end of the home consumer market. Cybex machines are known as quality machines that can help everyone from the beginner to the professional athlete improve their fitness levels.
History
Cybex acquired the patent for its first product, the Dynamometer, in 1969. The Dynamometer was used to assess joint strength and was used for physical therapy purposes. Cybex first began producing fitness equipment in 1983 after its parent company, Lumex, purchased Eagle Performance Systems. Cybex soon began to produce stationary bikes, rowing machines and strength training equipment as it branded itself as both a fitness and rehabilitation equipment company.
Types
As of October 2010, Cybex offers more than 30 different types of exercise machines. These include cardiovascular equipment like treadmills, stair steppers and arc cross trainers. There are also strength training machines such as multistation gyms, plate loaded free weight stations and functional trainers. Cybex has a line of fitness equipment that is specifically designed to accommodate people with physical disabilities.
Features
Because Cybex fitness equipment is largely marketed toward health clubs, much of it has high-end features such as ergonomic design, digital control panels and television attachments. According to Cybex's website, high quality steel, paint formulations by DuPont and laser welds make Cybex equipment durable enough to have a long life in a club setting. Innovations available on Cybex equipment include the ability to chain multiple cardio machines together so users can compete against one another and the ability of the weight stations on the multigyms to be used simultaneously.
Function
Cybex machines cover both major and minor types of training. Cardiovascular equipment like arc trainers, stair steppers and bikes can be used to burn calories, tone your muscles or strengthen your heart and lungs. Strength training equipment like the multistation gyms is used for fat burning, general fitness and bodybuilding.
Cybex's more unique products offer users ways to train that many other fitness machines are not capable of. Cybex's functional trainers have cables that can be pulled in any direction to help athletes train sport-specific motions, and the Cybex Trazer uses virtual reality to test a user's reaction time, speed, acceleration and balance.
Considerations
The main limiting factor for many people using Cybex equipment is cost. Because of their many features and quality engineering, many Cybex machines cost thousands of dollars. This makes home use impractical for fitness seekers on a budget. However, Cybex machines are backed by several quality certifications, including one from the International Standards Organization.
