The concept of basic nutrition can be summed up as the balanced consumption of macro and micro nutrients, derived from the foods and beverages we consume on a daily basis. Micronutrients encompass the vitamins, minerals and amino acids, which your body needs only in minuscule amounts. These substances are powerful agents that enable the body to produce enzymes, hormones and other substances essential for proper growth and development. Your body needs macronutrients in larger quantities: proteins, fats and carbohydrates. The body's optimal pH balance is slightly alkaline, and incorporating alkaline foods into the diet frequently can support optimal health. Consult your doctor about your body's pH balance and before making any drastic dietary changes.

Significance

Alkalinity is very significant when considering nutrition and health. Given the easy availability of processed and fast foods in modern society, many resting human bodies are in a predominantly acidic state of pH. This risky condition, known as acidosis, can create symptoms such as yeast/fungal overgrowth, hormone imbalance, premature aging, immune deficiency and the acceleration of free radical damage, possibly contributing to cancerous mutations, suggests the Natural Health School website.

Types

Alkaline foods range in type, from fruits such as figs, grapes, papaya, mango, dried dates to lemons and limes. Vegetables such as celery, alfalfa sprouts and broccoli are also very alkaline in pH. Certain nuts, such as almonds, are alkaline; parsley, kelp and cayenne pepper are spices and herbs that can support nutrition through alkalinity.

Considerations

Nourishing your body with alkaline foods can counteract the highly acidic staples such as coffee, wine, beer and processed meats, which are full of nitrates and sulfates. Most grains are also acidic in pH and the average person eats them in massive quantities, from breads and cereals to pastas and baked goods. Whenever you eat or drink a highly acidic food item, consider counteracting the acidity with an alkaline item, such as grapes or figs.

Prevention/Solution

A balanced approach in eating acidic foods and alkaline foods can prevent ill health, as can adequate hydration, which pushes the material through the body efficiently. Many studies on cancer and auto-immune disorders have shown that alkaline support in nutrition can support prevention of these ailments, the CancerActive website reports.

Potential

The potential for increased vitality and energy, as well as the increased potential for extended longevity, are primary focuses of alkaline diet structures and research. The natural pH within the body is slightly alkaline --- 7.35 to 7.45 on a scale of 1 to 14. With this in mind, it is no wonder the body flourishes with a perfect balance of pH, and tends to fail when acid is to prevalent within the system.
